I've Never Done Laundry. Help!

Information adapted from The Naked Roommate.

First things first—supplies.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Quarters if the washers and dryers at your school use them—some use debit, credit, or student ID cards
  • Laundry detergent of some kind
  • Dryer sheets or liquid fabric softener, optional

Harlan Says:

You don't necessarily have to sort your laundry, but if you wash dark and light colors together, they will bleed and then you'll end up wearing mostly pink and gray clothing. Wash clothes on the permanent press cycle (cold water works best).

Avoid shrinkage—read clothing labels carefully and follow directions. When in doubt, don't toss it in the dryer. Hang-dry whatever might shrink.

Never leave your clothes in the dryer unattended—clothes often get stolen or taken out and left on the floor.
